Macau, November 22 – Macau International Airport held a groundbreaking ceremony for its airport expansion reclamation project on the 22nd. The project plans to reclaim over 129 hectares of land and is expected to be completed by 2030.

The groundbreaking ceremony was witnessed by Ho Iat Seng, Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR), Zheng Xincong, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, Liu Xianfa, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macau SAR, Kou Hoi In, President of the Macau Legislative Assembly, along with representatives from the Executive Council, Legislative Assembly, relevant government departments, airport operators, project consultants, and construction teams.

Ma Iao Hang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Macau International Airport Co., Ltd. (CAM), stated that the airport expansion and reclamation project would proceed in phases as planned. Upon completion, the total usable area of the airport will increase to 325 hectares, with the first phase enhancing the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 13 million, ensuring sufficient reserves for future development. “With expanded land resources, the airport’s capacity for passenger and cargo handling, as well as its service facilities, will significantly improve, laying a solid foundation for the long-term development of the airport and contributing to the growth of Macau’s civil aviation and tourism industries.”

Alexis Tam, Chairman of CAM’s Executive Committee, noted that the expansion project design incorporates environmental considerations and ecological restoration and compensation measures. Pre-construction environmental and flood monitoring over a one-year period has already been completed, and inert materials will be used for reclamation to reduce pressure on landfill areas. Environmental monitoring will be conducted regularly during construction, and a five-year monitoring program will follow the project’s completion to assess environmental conditions. These efforts aim to promote the construction of a green airport and enhance the sustainable development of Macau International Airport.

The expansion project will adopt a non-stop construction approach, with some works scheduled for nighttime. During these times, the runway will be closed accordingly, and the airport will work with airlines in advance to adjust flight schedules to minimize impacts on airport operations.
